    Norwegian Elkhound Puppies

The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient Northern Spitz-type breed and is today the national dog of Norway. This breed has built a reputation as a guardian, hunter, and herder and as a defender. It is known for its courage in tracking as well as hunting moose and other game like wolf and bear. The breed was bred as an independent tracking dog that tracked moose and held them down until the hunter arrived. It will only bark after restraining the moose. It may also drive the moose to the direction of the hunter. Today, the breed is used on a leash as a modern day show dog. The San Diego Norwegian Elkhound puppies are also considered as family pets.

The Norwegian Elkhound puppy San Diego is a sturdy medium sized Spitz. In appearance, it is squarely built and short. It has a straight and strong back. The head is wedge-shaped and is broad at the ears. The muzzle is thicker and somewhat tapering. It has a defined stop. The teeth make a level bite. The eyes are oval in shape and dark brown in color. The ears are high set, firm and quite mobile. The chest is relatively wide and deep. The legs are straight when viewed from the front. The tail is high set and curls over the dog’s back.

The coat of the Norwegian Elkhound puppy San Diego is weather resistant. It is a double coat that is both thick and hard. The hair is gray with black tips. The undercoat is lighter, the muzzle, ears and tail top are black. The puppies are born black but their colors turn gray as they age (when a week old).

The Norwegian Elkhound puppy San Diego matures into an alert, friendly, loyal and bold dog. Some may be reserved with strangers but will receive family and friends enthusiastically. They are energetic, docile, and trustworthy and make great family companions since they get along well with kids. All in all, it is important to note that this breed is quite independent hence not easy to train in obedience training. The breed is relatively clean when compared to other dogs.

The San Diego Norwegian Elkhound puppies need a good pack leader who is firm and gentle in disciplining. Having been bred to be hunters, they make natural guard and watch dogs. They need to be trained patiently and socialized sufficiently.

The breed is prone to pyotraumatic dermatitis, PRA and hip dysplasia. You may also see the Fanconi Syndrome. You should never overfeed since the dog gains weight fast.

Being an energetic dog breed, the Norwegian Elkhound puppies San Diego will thrive on activities that are strenuous. If it does not have a job, it will need long walks and jogs daily. The coat is easy to groom. It needs regular brushing and extra care when shedding. The best thing about this breed is that it does not have the usual dog odor.
