Great Swiss Mountain Dog
Just as the name depicts, the Great Swiss Mountain was developed in the Swiss Alps. This breed is a result of mating indigenous breeds with the large Mastiff breed that was brought into Switzerland by foreigners. The breed was once believed to have been wiped out of existence in the 19th century but was later rediscovered in the early 20th century. The most distinctive features of the San Diego Great Swiss Mountain dog are its large size and heavy bone. It has superior physical strength. The breed’s coat has a combination of rust, white and black colors. It is the oldest and largest of all four Sennenhund.
Description
In appearance, the Great Swiss Mountain puppy San Diego is a large, study and very muscular. It has a flat skull with a slight stop. The length of the back-skull and that of the muzzle are almost the same. The teeth make a level bite. Both the lips and nose are black and the eyes are chestnut to hazel in color. The ears are triangular shaped and hang against the head. The fore legs are straight. The chest is deep and very broad. At the base, the tail is thicker and it tends to taper. The dewclaws are often removed.
The San Diego Great Swiss Mountain dog has a dense double coat. The coat has a tricolor. There are rust markings above each eye, cheeks and either sides of the chest. The white can be seen on the dog’s muzzle, chest and tail. Black makes up most of the coat.
Temperament
The Great Swiss Mountain dog San Diego is very active, sociable, calm and quite dignified. It loves human companion. In general, this breed is always eager to please. It does well with children and is generally good with house pets. When it comes to training, it must be taught not to chase and should also be socialized sufficiently with both people and other house pets.
The Great Swiss Mountain is considered to be a great watchdog. It is both cautious and very protective of its home. It will bark if it senses something odd. It does not love kennel life. It generally takes two to three years to mature. When training, you should be more concerned on achieving a pack leader status else the dog will dominate you.
Health
The Great Swiss Mountain puppy San Diego is generally healthy. However, just like all other dog breeds, there are a number of health issues to lookout for. The most common health issue is bloating. Care must be taken when feeding it. Other issues include digestive disorders, epilepsy, distichiasis and hip dysplasia.
Care
This breed will not do well in a kennel. It is suited for family life. You will need to exercises it daily at least with long walks. The coat is easy to groom. Regular brushing is recommended. What is more is that it is an average shedder.
