The Glen of Imaal Terrier is one of the four Irish terrier breeds. Some people refer to it as the Wicklow Terrier or the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier. Some people may even shorten the name to Glen. The breed originated in Wicklow, Ireland in the county of Glen of Imaal. It is believed to have come into existence during Queen Elizabeth I rein. The Glen of Imaal Terrier puppy San Diego was developed mainly as a working dog used in vermin hunting and herding. This is the rarest of all dog breeds.

Appearance

The San Diego Glen of Imaal Terrier puppies can best be described as a big dog on short legs. This is a dwarf dog breed. Their double coat is medium length and harsh on the top and very soft below. The coat colors include wheaten, brindle and blue. The breed does not molt but requires grooming regularly to keep the coat from matting. The breed has a large head and half-prick ears. The legs are bowed and short. The breed can take up to four years before maturing.

Temperament

The Glen of Imaal Terrier puppy San Diego is generally energetic and pretty tenacious. The breed is intelligent and needs an owner that has common sense to train them. They are fearless, loyal and great with people. All in all, if not properly trained and socialized, they can be very aggressive. This is especially so when they are provoked by other dog breeds.

They have a good sense of smell and can be used to hunt vermin. Some individuals can work perfectly in water. With their being bred initially as hunting dogs, they have a very high prey drive. They should, therefore, never be left alone with such house pets as rabbits.

It is also important to understand that this breed may be prone to the small dog syndrome. This is brought about by over protectiveness by the owner. They can be hard to manage after this. They should be shown all the time that they are not in charge.

Health

Care

The San Diego Glen of Imaal Terrier puppies will be moderately active indoors hence suited for apartment life. They need daily walks. When walking them, make sure they are not in front of you as this may cause them to assume the alpha position. Failure to exercise sufficiently will lead to undesirable behaviors. The breed’s coat needs stripping twice a year. They may also never shed.
