The German shorthaired pointer is a dog breed that was developed in the 19^th century in Germany. It was initially bred for hunting. It is well adapted for its original purpose. It is streamlined and powerful with strong legs that enable it to move swiftly. Its ears are floppy and set high on the head. The muzzle is both broad and long and pretty strong. This enables it to retrieve heavy game easily. Its profile is strong or straight Roman nosed. Its eyes are brown with the darker eyes being more desirable. Appearance

The head is either solid or nearly solid colored. The body is speckled with white and liver. Roan colored coats are also common and may have or lack patching. Care

On a daily basis, the breed requires sufficient exercises. The exercises may include long walks, jogs or runs alongside you on a bicycle. When unexercised, the dog will become destructive and restless. The smooth coat needs regular brushing. Rubbing the coat with a towel will leave it gleaming. The breed is an average shedder.
