MemberCurly-Coated Retriever
The Curly-Coated Retriever is often referred to as the Curly. It is a dog breed originating in England. It was initially used in waterfowl and bird hunting. It is the tallest of all retrievers and is distinguished by its mass of tight curly fur covering the body. The wavy coated and the curly coated were the first recognized breeds. They were established as early as the 1860.
Appearance
In general appearance, the San Diego Curly-Coated Retriever is an active and well muscled dog breed. The mature dog will appear leggy but is somewhat longer than it is tall. Its tight curled coat repels burrs, water and prevents any damage to the inner skin. There are two accepted colors of the Curly-Coated Retriever San Diego, sold liver and solid black. Some white hairs are permissible but large patches are not. The eyes are brown or black dogs and amber or brown in the lover colored dogs. The yellow eyes are unusual. The nose must be fully pigmented and should take the color of the coat.
Temperament
The Curly-Coated Retriever San Diego was initially bred as a gun dog. Today, they are still used as retrievers by bird hunters. They are generally fun loving breeds that are lively and highly valued as pets. With sufficient exercises, the breed is usually laid back and calm in the residential environment. This is what makes them great as family pets. They may at times be aloof in the presence of strangers but are affectionate and loyal to their family. They are generally intelligent though not easy to train as they get bored fast when it comes to repetitive training approaches.
Care
The San Diego Curly-Coated Retriever has no undercoat. Their coat is easy to maintain. They do not shed as much as double coated breeds do. They shed more during spring. Bathing should be done when necessary with shampoo. Regular exercising is also paramount for a healthy and jolly breed. Due to their high natural energy levels, failure to exercise them will lead to undesirable behaviors as the breed redirects the excess energy to other destructive activities. They do best with a job but will do great with daily jogs or long brisk walks. The Curly-Coated Retriever needs a high quality food. Breeders advocate for a natural diet made of vegetables and meat.
Health
In spite of the breed being generally healthy, it is susceptible to a number of health issues. The most common medical issues include cardiac problems, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eye problems, bloat, exercise induced collapse, cancer and glycogen storage disease. It is wise to take the San Diego Curly-Coated Retriever puppy for regular checkups to elude most of these diseases.
