The Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies are often referred to simply as Chessie. The breed has an intriguing history. In 1807, a wrecked ship was found off the coast of Maryland. In the ship there were two puppies, one red and the other black. The two were found to be great retrievers. Most of the dogs in the region including the Bloodhounds and the Irish Water Spaniels were bred with these two survivors. The descendants of these were found to be perfect over the icy waters of Chesapeake Bay and were used to retrieve fowl.  The Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies were recognized in 1885. Today, the breed is the state dog of Maryland.

Appearance

The San Diego Chesapeake Bay retriever puppy has a broad skull and a defined stop. The lips are thin. The ears are small and hanging. The eyes are amber in color. The breed has a deep and strong chest. The feet are webbed to improve swimming abilities. The hindquarters are muscular and are a bit higher than the front legs.

To be adapted to the environment it lives in, the Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies San Diego have a thick but short coat which is also waterproof. The undercoat is wooly and the outer coat oily and wavy on the back and shoulders. The dog can be brown, sedge or dead-grass in color. It may also have white markings on its stomach, chest and feet.

Temperament

The San Diego Chesapeake Bay retriever puppy is friendly, obedient and intelligent. It is quite energetic when outdoors and very calm when indoors. It may appear bored if not sufficiently exercised. When properly exercised, it is vocal and tends to bare the teeth in a grin. This is often mistaken for aggressiveness.

The Chesapeake Bay retriever puppies have a tendency to chase. They often chase cats. When well socialized, they will learn to coexist with cats and other house pets. They need to be socialized at an early age. This breed gets along with other dogs but can at times be aggressive towards males. They are always suspicious of strangers and can be quite aggressive when they feel their owner is threatened.

Care

Grooming is important. The San Diego Chesapeake Bay retriever puppy needs regular brushing when shedding. This will help get rid of dead hair. However, when brushing, you need to be careful not to cause harm to the texture of the dog’s coat. Bathing should be done only when it is necessary.

The breed is susceptible to a number range of diseases such as hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and eye problems such as cataracts and PRA. They also suffer from bloat and other digestive problems. Proper dieting should be done. Exercises should be avoided immediately after feeding.

In spite of it being intelligent, the San Diego Chesapeake Bay retriever puppy can be difficult to train. You need to be patient.  The breed also enjoys swimming in cold water.
