A puppy rescue is a noble thing to do. However, you must do it with the understanding that caring for your dog requires a lot of commitment. There is training to worry about, proper nutrition to plan for and diseases to watch out for among other things. If you are not sure you have the time to care for a dog, it is better not to adopt one in the first place. However, if you have decided to go ahead with the adoption, there are a number of things you can do to keep your dog safe and healthy.
Make him wear a dog collar
There are certain areas where it is a requirement for dogs to wear dog collars. However, even if this is not a requirement in your area, make sure that after a dog adoption you make your dog wear a collar. The reason for this is because when your dog has a collar, it will not be identified as homeless. People will know he has an owner and will use the information on the collar to contact you. A collar also offers a way for you to restrain your dog. You can hold him in place using the collar.
Keep him away from the heat
Prior to considering a puppy adoption, you need to know their care needs. Some breeds are more sensitive to heat. In this case, the dog will become disoriented and even pass out if he is not able to regulate the temperature. Make sure your dog gets adequate water and shade when in hot weather. Don’t be afraid to invest in the pet sun blocks which protect against sunburns. Still on matters heat, never leave your dog all alone in the car.
Get him chipped
After a puppy rescue, you need to consider chipping him. This will give you the much needed peace of mind. Although it costs money, chipping your dog will keep you from a lot of headache. The microchip is placed under the skin of the dog. Anyone that finds the dog can hence scan it to get the contact details of his owner. Proof of ownership is very important more so if a certain breed is a prime target for the thieves.
Use a leash
The last thing you want is for your dog to run off and end up in trouble. A leash will help you get better control when with your dog outdoors.
Other things you need to do to keep your dog safe include:
- Be careful when near moving water
- Train your dog properly
- Watch out for bugs
- Feed him high quality food
- Secure the playing yard
- Keep dangerous items out of reach
- Inoculate him
Giving your dog the best care must always be a top priority. Remember that you considered a dog rescue so that you can give him the care he never got. Don’t put him through hell again.
